Alternatively, the oral cancers may originate in any of the tissues of the mouth, and may be of varied histologic types: teratoma, adenocarcinoma derived from a major or minor salivary gland, lymphoma from tonsillar or other lymphoid tissue, or melanoma from the pigment-producing cells of the oral mucosa. There are several types of oral cancers, but around 90% are squamous cell carcinomas, originating in the tissues that line the mouth and lips. Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), lips, or palate (roof of the mouth). Most oral cancers look very similar under the microscope and are called squamous cell carcinoma, but less commonly other types of oral cancer occur, such as Kaposi's sarcoma." http:www.ModestoNews.org All Rights Reserved - Copyright 2014

Diet and general health tips are also included, such as eating more fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water. http://www.mykidsdentistonline.com Find a My Kid's Dentist location or request an appointment today -- [Ruthie] Yeah!... Time to brush! [Girl] Why do we brush? [Ruthie] We brush to remove plaque and stay clean. [Frank] What's plaque? [Ruthie] Plaque is yucky stuff that can stick to teeth... Plaque is bad because it's full of nasty germs. These germs can hurt teeth by making little holes called cavities. Plaque and cavities make teeth weaker. That's why it's super important to brush all the plaque off every day. To keep healthy teeth we have to brush for 2 minutes every morning and 2 minutes every night before bed! It's really important to brush your teeth the RIGHT WAY! First make sure to use a special kid's toothbrush when you brush. Kid's brushes fit little mouths and have soft bristles. Put a little dot (about the size of a pea) of fluoride toothpaste on your brush. Moms have to help babies brush their teeth and babies can't use fluoride toothpaste. You have to be able to spit to use fluoride! Once you have the toothpaste on your toothbrush...open your mouth wide! Start with the teeth in the back of your mouth and brush in little circles. Work your way to the teeth in the front of your mouth and don't forget to brush the gums! Move the brush back and forth gently in short strokes. Brush the top, front, and back sides of each tooth. Make sure you get the inside of all the teeth. When you're done be sure to spit out all the toothpaste. Don't swallow the toothpaste...it will upset your tummy. When you're done brushing it's time to floss. Flossing can help remove food and plaque from in between teeth and along the gum line. Parents should start flossing their children's teeth as soon as they have two teeth that touch and they should floss twice a week. When you floss, break off about 18 inches of floss. Wind the floss around your pointer finger. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and fingers. Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into your gums. When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with an upward motion. By the time you're 7 or so, you should be flossing every night at bedtime with your mom and dad's supervision. One other way we can help keep teeth clean and healthy is by eating and drinking healthy foods. Eating healthy foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner is the best way to keep your teeth and whole body in good shape. If you're hungry and want a snack, try foods like fruit, raw veggies and low-fat cheese. Stay away from sugary soda and sweets. If you're thirsty drink water or low-fat milk. If you brush, floss and eat right you'll have a beautiful smile for your entire life! Find a My Kid's Dentist location or request an appointment today by logging in at www.mykidsdentistonline.com.

In this exclusive interview, Dr. Richard Malouf tells of his inspiration to become a dentist, how he wanted to help people, his educational path and his driving motivation to learn, improve and become the best dentist he could. For more information on Richard Malouf, visit http://www.RichardMalouf.com TRANSCRIPT: In the sixth grade I did a science fair project, and it had to do with dentistry. It was really cool. I got to do a little field project. I went to the local dentist. I thought, 'Wow, this is a really interesting way of life. He's a doctor. He doesn't have doctors' hours. He gets to make really cool things with his hands and be innovative. And he has a lot of respect. And he gets paid pretty decently,' so I said, 'All those things really make sense to me. I like that.' So I did my first science fair project and I made a tri-fold board and cut out a hole and put a light behind it and put an x-ray on the front and got all these different kinds of teeth and my project was actually on the development of teeth—how they go from, you know, a child to the adult version of teeth. I'll tell you what, from that course, from that project, it was a straight arrow. I had a laser focus on, 'I'm going to be a dentist.' I got accepted to three different, there's only three dental schools in the state of Texas and I got accepted to those three dental schools after my second year in college. So I was a very young dental student. After traveling around to different dental schools, I settled on the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. I had a fantastic education there, I think the program there is excellent. When I was in dental school, I wasn't the smartest in the class, but I guarantee you, if I wasn't the hardest, I was one of the hardest working ones in that class. I wanted to be the guy who was well rounded and I knew a lot about different areas and I could kind of bring those together and be a really comprehensive provider. And I went out and I spent several hundred hours in continuing education learning about orthodontics because I really liked it and it made me a better practitioner for knowing how to do it. I went and learned about sinus lifts and veneers and a bunch of more advanced things. Now, am I saying that I'm the best there ever was? No. But I sure did my best to try to make sure I was educated in different fields and do all I could do within my comfort zone. I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted to be able to help people. I wanted people to respect me. I wanted to be able to have an occupation that I could provide for a family, and the utmost, I really wanted my parents to be proud of me.
