Alternatively, the oral cancers may originate in any of the tissues of the mouth, and may be of varied histologic types: teratoma, adenocarcinoma derived from a major or minor salivary gland, lymphoma from tonsillar or other lymphoid tissue, or melanoma from the pigment-producing cells of the oral mucosa. There are several types of oral cancers, but around 90% are squamous cell carcinomas, originating in the tissues that line the mouth and lips. Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), lips, or palate (roof of the mouth). Most oral cancers look very similar under the microscope and are called squamous cell carcinoma, but less commonly other types of oral cancer occur, such as Kaposi's sarcoma." http:www.ModestoNews.org All Rights Reserved - Copyright 2014

In this exclusive interview, Dr. Richard Malouf tells of his inspiration to become a dentist, how he wanted to help people, his educational path and his driving motivation to learn, improve and become the best dentist he could. For more information on Richard Malouf, visit http://www.RichardMalouf.com TRANSCRIPT: In the sixth grade I did a science fair project, and it had to do with dentistry. It was really cool. I got to do a little field project. I went to the local dentist. I thought, 'Wow, this is a really interesting way of life. He's a doctor. He doesn't have doctors' hours. He gets to make really cool things with his hands and be innovative. And he has a lot of respect. And he gets paid pretty decently,' so I said, 'All those things really make sense to me. I like that.' So I did my first science fair project and I made a tri-fold board and cut out a hole and put a light behind it and put an x-ray on the front and got all these different kinds of teeth and my project was actually on the development of teeth—how they go from, you know, a child to the adult version of teeth. I'll tell you what, from that course, from that project, it was a straight arrow. I had a laser focus on, 'I'm going to be a dentist.' I got accepted to three different, there's only three dental schools in the state of Texas and I got accepted to those three dental schools after my second year in college. So I was a very young dental student. After traveling around to different dental schools, I settled on the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. I had a fantastic education there, I think the program there is excellent. When I was in dental school, I wasn't the smartest in the class, but I guarantee you, if I wasn't the hardest, I was one of the hardest working ones in that class. I wanted to be the guy who was well rounded and I knew a lot about different areas and I could kind of bring those together and be a really comprehensive provider. And I went out and I spent several hundred hours in continuing education learning about orthodontics because I really liked it and it made me a better practitioner for knowing how to do it. I went and learned about sinus lifts and veneers and a bunch of more advanced things. Now, am I saying that I'm the best there ever was? No. But I sure did my best to try to make sure I was educated in different fields and do all I could do within my comfort zone. I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted to be able to help people. I wanted people to respect me. I wanted to be able to have an occupation that I could provide for a family, and the utmost, I really wanted my parents to be proud of me.

http://www.bestnjdentist.com I've always been a fan of nice teeth. It's the first thing that I always looked at whenever I was going out with a girl was their teeth; I am a big fan of nice teeth. Since getting into dentistry it's been a hugely rewarding career for me. I love doing what I do. I'm here every single day helping patients out, helping them with their health, helping them with their questions, helping them with their concerns, helping them if they're in a crisis situation, whether they could be swollen or have an infection or be in pain. The amount of people I get to help out every year is astounding and so rewarding. I couldn't have picked a better profession if I tried. I was born and raised in Highland Park, New Jersey, which is about a ten minute drive from here in Old Bridge. I've been a New Jersey guy my whole life; my whole family is from New Jersey. My father is a cardiologist and has been a cardiologist right here in central New Jersey for 30 years. My mom still lives in New Jersey, my sisters still live in New Jersey and my wife and I and our six children together all live in New Jersey. Really it's a great family. I love it here, I really am a local guy who has strong ties to this community and probably will be here for the rest of my life. I attended New York University College of Dentistry and graduated in 1997. The year after I graduated I attended a residency program at Robert Wood Johnson hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Since I graduated from my residency program I bought an office in Edison, New Jersey, and I've since bought two new practices which has led me here to Old Bridge, New Jersey. In New Jersey one is required to take 40 hours of continuing education every other year. I am a continuing education enthusiast; I want to know the best stuff that is out there in dentistry. If there is something that's being done that can make life better for my patients, or make my job easier, I am going to learn it. Routinely I take about 200 hours of continuing education every single year and I do learn the latest stuff with the treatments and the procedures I do. If there's a better way to do a root canal I'm going to learn how to do it. If there's a better way to place implants I'm going to learn how to do it. If there's a better way to do a bone graft or even a simple gum treatment I'm going to learn how to do it. I believe that my patients deserve the best and if there's something out there that's going to help them I'm going to learn how to do it. A lot of people come to me when they've been to a bunch of other dentists who have been unable to come up with a solution. I like to think of myself as a dentist who thinks outside of the box and comes up with a lot of solutions that other dentists either may not think of or may not even be qualified to do. I get a lot of cases actually referred to me by other dentists when they're not sure exactly how to restore this case. If you need a dental implant and you've gone to a dentist before and they've told you you're not a candidate that probably makes up about 50% of the patients I place dental implants on. For dental implants coming here, you're going to end up with a good solution. http://www.bestnjdentist.com
